CAM Challenge!

The Elementary Kids are in a CAM Challenge for the month of February!  It's a battle between the classes to bring in the most items for Gastonia's Crisis Assistance Ministry! For each item brought in, a point will be awarded.  FIVE points will be awarded for each jar of Peanut Butter and each jar of Jelly.  negative points will be assessed for damaged cans, boxes or expired items.  Kids will collect items in their Sunday school rooms and Ms. Sarah will count during the week and update the totals on the bulletin board outside the canteen.
Kids are challenged to bring in food they like! The good cereals, the yummy spaghetti-os, their favorite mac and cheese and their favorite flavors of cake mixes and icing!

Kindergarten: Let’s Find Out About Worship
Thank you to the Colletta's for teaching this week while Rev. Sally is in the Holy Land.  She will be returning this week - continued prayers for safe travels!
The Church is a safe place to be.  Jesus in the Temple.
Bible Story:  Luke 2:39-52

Some things about Jesus’ life as he grew up we know because of what life was like in Bible times.  Jesus grew up in Nazareth.  Jesus learned to be a carpenter from Joseph.  Beginning at age five he probably went to the synagogue school and studied the Scriptures with other boys of Nazareth.  In today’s story, Jesus was old enough to attend the special worship activities at the Temple during Passover with the rest of the men.

What questions do you think Jesus asked the teachers at the Temple?  What questions would you want to know?

1st & 2nd Grades

February Scripture Verse: We know that God has sent you to teach us.  You could not work these miracles, unless God were with you.  John 3:2, CEV
Bible Story:  Luke 5:1-11
Leap of Faith:  I know that God sent Jesus to teach me how to live.

Today’s story is about fish and the men who catch them.  Fishing was an important occupation in Bible times.  Fishermen had to know the different types of fish, the kinds of nets they could use and the importance of team work.  Fishermen of Bible times knew that if they didn’t work together, they could totally lose their catch of the day—or their boat.  As we hear the stories from the Bible, we are invited to be disciples of Jesus, too, to listen to his teachings and to know what God wants us to do.  What message do you hear?  How can you share that with others?

February Memory Verse: The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heave.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.

4th & 5th Grades

Bible Verse:
Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you.  Go in peace.” Luke 7:50
The Gospels tells about:  Forgiveness
Bible Story:     Luke 7:36-50
Faith Direction:  Jesus shows us how to forgive others.

Jesus shows us how to offer and receive forgiveness in our relationships with others.
Has there been a time when you have:
Received forgiveness from a family member?
Offered forgiveness to a family member?
Received forgiveness from a friend?
Offered forgiveness to a friend?

Is it easy or difficult to offer and receive forgiveness?  Why? How does offering and receiving forgiveness strengthen our relationship with other?  With God?

There's an app for that!

Several of our classes are using Cokesbury’s Grow, Proclaim, Serve! curriculum.  If your child is in the Preschool, First & Second Grade, or Fourth & Fifth Grade classes, you can continue the learning at home! Download “Grow, Proclaim, Serve! Mobile” in the iTunes app store.  It’s compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.  There are videos, games, music, and beneficial articles.  Even if your child’s class isn’t using this material, it can still be a great resource!

Due to the snow days last week, we're a little behind on posting our blogs!

Kindergarten: Let’s Find Out About Worship

I am your God and you are my child.  You belong to me and I belong to you.

1st & 2nd Grades

January Scripture Verse:  Jesus matured in wisdom and years, and in favor with God and with people.  Luke 2:52
Bible Story:  Luke 4:14-30
Leap of Faith:  My faith in God grows as I grow.
Can you think of a time when you were sick or felt bad?  Can you think of a time when you felt lonely or discouraged when nothing going right?  What kind of “good news” would have made you feel better?

When today’s Bible story took place, Jesus had already begun his ministry of teaching and healing. Stories about him were beginning to spread. But it was the people in his own hometown, the people who had known him since he was a boy, just couldn’t believe that Jesus was the one they had been waiting for.

Club3G: 3rd Grades

What is God saying to you in these verses?

When I am Lonely… Psalm 23

When I am Worried… Matthew 6:25-33

When I am Afraid… Psalm 27:1

When I feel that God is far away… Romans 8:38-39

When I am tempted to go along with the crowd rather than doing what I know is right… 1 Peter 3:13-17

When I have trouble getting along with other people…Romans 12:14-18

4th & 5th Grades
Bible Verse: Treat people in the same way that you want them to treat you. Luke 6:31, CEB
The Gospels tells about: How to Treat Others
Bible Story:  Luke 6:20-38
Faith Direction:  Jesus teaches us to treat others with respect and love.
What does it mean to treat others the way you want to be treated?  How easy or difficult is this to do in your everyday life?  Why is it easier to treat some people with kindness and generosity than others?  Is it hard for you to view people with whom you’re competing as your friends?  What are some ways to overcome this?

Parent News!

SOUPer Bowl Sunday
Sunday, February 2nd is the SOUPer Bowl!  No, I didn’t mistype that!  On Super Bowl Sunday, youth and children’s groups at churches across the country are collecting $$ from worshippers as they leave church to benefit local soup kitchens and food pantries.  We will be collecting money for CAM: Crisis Assistance Ministries.  FISH kids will be collecting after the 8:45 and 11 am services in the Sanctuary, as well as the 9 am service in the Theater.  Bring your $$ to support this ministry!

If any FISH kids are willing to collect, grab your soup pot and contact Sarah, sarah@fumcgastonia.org letting her know which service you’ll collect for (you don’t have to attend that service).   Remember – bring a big soup pot so people can fill it up!!  When everyone has left church, please bring the money to Sarah’s Office for counting.  ALL money will go to CAM!

Parent Network

Concessions
Children’s Council has been selling concessions at the FUMC games on Friday and Saturday nights in order to raise more funds to continue upgrading the children’s area. We need your help!   If you are willing to give of a Friday or Saturday night in February, please contact Caitlin Gault – cmgault91@gmail.com

Nursery News
From our Nursery Coordinator: Caitlin Gault – cmgault91@gmail.com
We are asking families to sign up for dates to volunteer in the nursery again through the remainder of the school year. We would like to have at least one family to volunteer each Sunday, so that we can have floaters to assist where needed within our three nurseries. We are asking each family to consider volunteering for 2 of the Sundays between now and June.

We’ve also implemented a new policy of asking parents/guardians to wait outside in the hallway when picking up.  This will help alleviate chaos and stress for the children.
Did you know that we are now including a Bible story time during each nursery hour? We are looking to develop this during the next few months, adding a sensory learning element and continuing to connect children of all ages to Jesus.

February FISH Meeting
On Sunday, February 9th we’re going to have a field trip!  Please meet and pick up at Sam’s Club on Franklin Blvd.  We’ll meet just inside the entrance at 4 p.m. and we’ll pick up in the snack bar area at 6 p.m..  We’ll take the money we collect on SOUPer bowl Sunday and go shopping for CAM.  EXTRA PARENT SPONSORS ARE NEEDED as we will divide up into groups and shop.  Matt & Leigh Smith are our parent sponsors for dinner and we’ll be having hotdogs and drinks in the Sam’s snack bar.  Sam’s Club closes at 6 p.m. on Sunday’s so it’s important to be on time if not early!  This will be an awesome experience for the kids to see how far $$ goes and how sometimes eating healthy can be expensive.  The goal will be to see how much good stuff the group can buy with the $ they have!  Please contact Sarah at Sarah@fumcgastonia.org if you plan on attending.

Kindergarten: Let’s Find Out About Worship
I am your God and you are my child.  You belong to me and I belong to you.
In the United Methodist Church, it is common for children to be baptized as infants.  If you were baptized as an infant, as a family, talk to you about the day you were baptized.  Not everyone is baptized as an infant. If you haven’t been baptized yet, talk with your family about what it means to be baptized.

1st & 2nd Grades
January Scripture Verse:  Jesus matured in wisdom and years, and in favor with God and with people.  Luke 2:52

January 19, 2014
Bible Story:  Mark 1:4-11
Leap of Faith:  My faith in God grows as I grow.
Twenty years have passed since Jesus was a boy at the Temple.  The time has come for him to begin the job laid out for him by God.  The book of Mark begins with what he thought was the most important part of Jesus’ life—being baptized.  In today’s story, Jesus is ready to take on the job that God has planned for him.  He comes to the river Jordan where his cousin John is preaching and teaching.  What amazing thing happened after Jesus was baptized?  Talk with your family about your baptism and what has happened in your life since that day.

Congratulations to Grant Styers for memorizing the Books of the Old Testament!!
Each link represents a book of the Bible!  I have a feeling these are going to be wrapping around the room soon!  (and check out that new paint job!)
The 12 Disciples
Who? What? Which? Where? Huh?
Who were the first two disciples?
Which one of the disciples denied knowing Jesus?
Which disciple was the only one there when Jesus was crucified?
Who replaced Judas after his deception?
Where in the bible can you find each of the 12 disciples mentioned?  (list the verses)

4th & 5th Grades
January 19, 2014
Bible Verse: Jesus asked them, “Why are your frightened?  Don’t you have faith yet?” Mark 4:40 (CEB)

The Gospels tells about: Miraculous Signs
Bible Story:   Mark 4:35-41
Faith Direction:  Jesus performed miracles so that we may have faith.

What do you think would have been the hardest part about being one of Jesus’ disciples?
Do you think it was difficult for Jesus to have followers who sometimes did not understand his true identity?  What signs and wonders from God do you experience in your everyday life?  Prayer: God of miracles, thank you for sending us signs and wonders that reveal your love for us.  Help us be open to the many ways you are in relationship with us through Jesus.  Amen.

January FISH

I'm proud of the bunch of staunch Panthers fans who gathered in the Canteen for FISH on Sunday afternoon.  We had a good time making Rainbow Loom bracelets and Prayer beads and hearing Merrily and Mrs. Revonda share about their life dealing with Cystic Fibrosis.

Here are several links to videos we watched:

Here's another website you might enjoy visiting to help you learn more about Cystic Fibrosis.

If you would like to donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Honor of Merrily Tew you may do so at Revonda's fundraising page:  http://www.cff.org/LWC/dsp_donationPage.cfm?idEvent=23688&idUser=524385

We are selling Rainbow Loom Bracelets for $1 each to raise money to help put an end to childhood cancer!  The prayer beads we made will be available for Rev. Sarah and the other ministers to share with others.  The kids made some for themselves and then some for others.  Supplies for these two projects are always available if you would like to borrow them to make these at home.

FISH: First In Serving Him is a group of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders with a heart for serving God by serving others.  We meet the second Sunday of each month.

In February we'll have two activities:  Collecting $ after worship on SOUPer Bowl Sunday, February 2nd. All money goes to Crisis Assistance ministry.  But instead of just sending a check - We're going shopping!  On February 9th we'll meet from 4 to 6 p.m. at Sam's Club - yes, the Sam's Club, on Franklin Blvd. to shop for CAM.  MORE parents will be needed for this event!
